14-year-old Troy (The Mongoose) Estabrook of Manchester N.H.
Traveled to Florida to participate in the second annual Winter Short Track
Nationals. This was Estabrooks second year riding his Honda cr 125 in
this competition and his first year ever riding his Honda crf 250 and his
Honda crf 450.
After the first three rounds of racing
Estabrook had the second place spot in the 125 class locked up and was a few
points ahead of Kyle Wyman for second place in the 250 class. He
had failed to make the main event on his 450 in the first round at the
Daytona Municipal stadium, but had a much better time in rounds three and
four in Ocala. On The first day there in the 450 mod qualifier, Estabrook
was sure he would make it to the main this time and without hesitation he
was off. Estabrook rode his butt off and finished the qualifier
in second place,
He did it, and He was in the
main event!! Troy was so happy you could see his smile a mile away. In the
main event that night Estabrook had an awesome start and was riding in third
place when the first and second place riders crashed, this would call for a
single file restart. In the restart the rider lined up behind Estabrook
tried to cut underneath him in the first turn, sliding his tire along the
side of Troy's swing arm causing that rider to crash. There
would be another single file restart. This time Troy came out of turn one in
fifth place and with only two laps left that's where he remained. Not bad
for his first main event against the big boys!!
Day two at Ocala was a little
more dangerous, there had been severe down pours through out the evening and
early morning hours. Steve Nace and his crew along with Ken and the AMA crew
worked endlessly to keep the track in safe riding conditions. When it was
time for the 450 qualifier, Troy didn't let that bother him. He took
off from that line straight to the hole shot, rode smart and
fast all the way to the checkered flag!!
The main events took place under the
lights because we started so late. By the time the 450 main was up we all
were concerned with the racetrack and hoped for a safe race above all. Troy
had a pretty good start but was hit hard in the first turn. Although he was
hurt he continued to fight his way through the pain and finished in sixth
place completely satisfied with himself for staying out there and finishing
the race. This left him tied in points with Justin Hannah in eigth place.
This was not where Estabrook was hoping to be at this point, However he knew
that this class would be very tough considering that the majority of the
riders have been racing in this class for a few years and he was only a
rookie.
The last round of racing took place at
Bithlo. Unlike Ocala and the Municipal Stadium which have distinct grooves
and heaven help you if you come off the groove. This was a cushioned
racetrack, with no groove, and lots of space for racing. A lot of the riders
that like the grooved racetracks were all whining about this track but
riders like Estabrook and Hanna were pretty happy! This was their kind of
track. It didn't matter who got the hole shot here because there was plenty
of room for passing, unlike the grooved tracks where if you come off the
groove to try and pass your pretty much done for.
Estabrook was definitely on a mission.
He started the day by winning the qualifier for the 125 class. He then went
out and crashed in the 250 qualifier. Estabrook shook off the dirt and then
in what was said to be the most exciting race thus far that day. Estabrook
won the 450 qualifier again and was on his way to the main for the third
time! The mains started with the 250 first, Troy battled tooth and nail all
the way to the checkered flags finishing in second place. This second
place finish left him tied with Wyman for the second place overall plate in
the 250cc 4 stroke premier class. Due to the rules of the tiebreaker,
Estabrook would get the third place plate.
Next up was the 125 race, this time
Troy was determined to win. He had finished in second place too many times
now and he was finally at a track he liked. When the green flag dropped
Estabrook went straight to the front and then dominated the entire race,
finally a 125 win. He finished the 125 series with a second place plate!!!
Now it was time for the last race with
the big boys. The 450's. Troy was so pumped from his previous races that he
could hardly wait to get out there. The green flag dropped and he was on his
way. He started out in second place and by the time they were on lap three
Troy was making his move on the leader. Troy made an awesome pass on the
outside and then proceeded to pull away. By the time they reached the
checkered flags Troy was at least three bikes lengths ahead of second place.
He Won!!! Finally he showed everyone that he could not only run with the big
boys, but he could beat them as well. I have never in the eight years he's
been racing seen him happier about a win than he was that night. I think he
will remember it forever. So after all was said and done Estabrook finished
the 450 mod series in fourth place, just nine points behind the third place
finisher. (Imagine if he had only qualified that first day in Daytona, he
would have only needed a ninth place finish or better there and he could
have been in the top three just like he had hoped for). Awesome Job!! Now
Troy will get ready for the New England Dirt Track Series, The Jolly Roger
Series, and The AMA Grand Nationals in Springfield in July!!
